Week viii

CITATION & DOCUMENTING INFORMATION SOURCES

For this week was the same like the previous week but a little details about APA citation. The lecturer gave us more exercises on this lesson for understanding more about the lesson. We did an exercise in the class it was a bit OK  after doing the exercise our doubts was cleared.some parts i couldn't so  I asked more about this lesson in the tutorial class.

we came to know how to -
  • Summarizing - Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a broad overview of sources material.
  • Paraphrasing - Putting a passage from source material into your own words.
  • Quoting- Use the author's words exactly and the quotation marks only for short quotations.
  • Referencing- A note in a publication referring the reader to another passage or source.

why do we need to do source integration and how?
we have to intergrate the source to provide support for claim or add credibility to our writing, refer to work that lead up to the work we are doing now, give example of several, points of view on a subject, call attention to a position that we wish to agree and disagree with, highlight a particular striking phrase, sentence, or passage by quoting the original, distance yourself from the original by quoting it in order to cue readers that the words are not own and expand the breadth or depth of our writing.

We was so confused of doing our  APA report but after this lesson we got to know the way how to do that and also from this lesson we came to know how to write reference to our report.
There are 3 type of citation

      1. Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is generally used when you wish to refer to sentences or phrases in the source text. It is particularly useful when you are dealing with facts and definitions. Paraphrasing involves rewriting a short section from the source text in different words whilst keeping the same meaning.

      2. Summarizing
Summarization is the restating of the main ideas of the text in as few words as possible.  It can be done in writing, orally, through drama, through art and music, in groups and individually.  There is extensive research that shows that summarization is among the top nine most effective teaching strategies in the history of education (Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock, 2001).  Teachers who start a lesson by summarizing the big points in the day's lesson and end by having students summarize their learning see gains in the retention of the material.  Several summarization techniques have been provided.

     3. Quoting
Quoting is when you repeat another author’s work word-for-word. Whenever you quote a source you must clearly reference where the information was taken from and where the quotation starts and ends. If you do not correctly reference a quotation then this will be identified through “TURNITIN” plagiarism detection software.
If you use a quotation in your assignment keep it short (usually no more than 25 words) and make sure it fits in with the rest of your writing. Information on how to use quotations is available
It is generally not good academic practice to rely heavily on quotations when writing an assignment. This is because quoting a source does not demonstrate that you have understood what you have read. Likewise, it can be difficult to make an assignment that contains lots of quotes ‘flow’ because it contains different writing styles. It is therefore better to paraphrase sources where possible to find out more about paraphrasing.
That's all for me today... see you on next post...
